1-inch hail (quarter-sized) can damage asphalt shingles. 1.25-inch and up almost always causes damage that qualifies for a claim.
What does hail damage look like on shingles?+
Round dark spots where granules have been knocked off, exposing the asphalt mat. From the ground, you often can't see it — granule loss in your gutters is a tell.
